What I’m Jamming To: June 7, 2011

One of my guilty pleasure songs is “The Lion Sleeps Tonight“, originally written by South African Zulu musician Solomon Linda in 1939, turned into a US Billboard No. 1 by The Tokens in 1961, and turned into a song that reached immortality in the Disney cannon with its inclusion in the Lion King. I’m also a sucker for any early 90’s music videos that used the same production techniques Bill Nye the Science Guy’s television show and Earthworm Jim’s commercials featured. This They Might Be Giants song riffs on the classic with fun bass and brass lines and features Lauren Cantrell. It was original released on their 1992 record Apollo 18.
